Once upon a chilly winter, in a place called Valley Forge, the trees wore blankets of snow and the winds sang lullabies that could freeze your whiskers! Here, General George Washington and his soldiers made their camp while the snow kept dancing down from the sky.
The soldiers were cold and their tummies rumbled like little thunderstorms because they didn't have enough food. Even the trees seemed to shiver with them. But among the icy fingers of wind, there was a warm glow of hope in General Washington's heart.
One day, a friendly neighbor named Isaac Potts was riding his horse, Mr. Clip-Clop, near the camp. As they trotted along, Mr. Clip-Clop's ears twitched. Isaac heard a voice, soft and deep, floating on the cold air. 'Who could that be?' he wondered.
They followed the voice, like following the trail of cookie crumbs, until they found General Washington. There, in a secret snowy spot, he was on his knees, not making snow angels, but praying with all his heart for his soldiers and the land they loved.
Isaac watched as General Washington's breath turned to mist, swirling up to the tree branches above. 'Even when things look super duper tough, we can be brave and strong,' he thought. Isaac felt a warm flutter in his chest, like a tiny bird had built a nest there.
With a whisper to Mr. Clip-Clop, Isaac decided they should not disturb the General. They tiptoed away on the crunchy snow, but the picture of General Washington stayed in Isaac's mind like the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle that makes the whole picture clear.
From that day on, stories of the General's snowy prayer spread around like marshmallows in hot chocolate. They warmed the hearts of the soldiers and gave them strength. Together with General Washington, they faced that long, frosty winter with courage, as friends holding hands in a line, ready to hop into the bright days to come.
