Leo and Maria were playing in the golden fields near their home, laughing as they ran.
Suddenly, they smelled smoke. 'Do you smell that?' asked Leo, looking around.
Maria pointed to the horizon. 'Look! Smoke!' she exclaimed, her voice shaking.
The sky was turning orange, and the smoke was getting thicker. 'We need to go home!' shouted Leo.
They started running, the tall grass brushing against them as they hurried back.
With the fire behind them, they could hear the crackling and the roar of the flames.
Maria tripped over a stone, but Leo quickly helped her up. 'Come on, we can't stop!'
They could see their house in the distance, the safe haven they needed to reach.
As they ran, they remembered the safety drills they had at school. 'Stay low,' Leo reminded Maria.
They finally reached their house and burst through the door, gasping for air.
Their parents were already packing. 'We were so worried!' said their mother, hugging them tight.
Together, they all got into the car and drove away, watching as firefighters battled the blaze.
Maria held Leo’s hand tightly. 'That was too close,' she whispered. 'We made it,' Leo whispered back.
