Eugene’s First Big Day

Eugene was a bright young child, with dark hair that curled at the end, sparkling eyes like the night sky, and a heart full of dreams. Today was his first day at a new school, and he had butterflies as wild as squirrels in his tummy.

A young Asian-American boy with dark curly hair and sparkling eyes standing nervously in front of a large, colorful school.

The school was tall, a building of brick so red, it looked like a giant’s big loaf of bread. 'Go make friends,' his mom said, and gave him a lunchbox shaped like a panda bear’s head.

Inside, he found a classroom as bright as the morning sun, with pictures and charts and colors by the ton. But oh, how his feet felt as heavy as lead when he saw all the kids—none of whom he had ever met.
