Once, not too long ago or too far away, there lived a very smart man named Mr. Tempus. He created a time machine out of gears, dials, and shining metal.
Gears - a toothed wheel that works with others to alter the relation between the speed of an engine and the speed of the driven parts. 'Can you name an object that uses gears?'
Mr. Tempus flipped a switch, pressed a button, and with a whoosh, he traveled into tomorrow...
Switch - a device for making and breaking a connection in an electric circuit. 'Show me how you use a light switch.'
He found himself in a garden full of laughter, where the sunny Eloi played among flowers and trees.
Laughter - the sound of someone laughing. 'What makes you burst into laughter?'
But Mr. Tempus learned of the Morlocks, shy creatures of the night, who made the happy Eloi nervous.
Shy - being reserved or having or showing nervousness or timidity in the company of other people. 'Tell me about a time you felt shy.'
One morning, the time machine was gone! The Eloi pointed to the earth. The Morlocks must have taken it underground!
Underground - beneath the surface of the ground. 'What creatures live underground?'
Mr. Tempus befriended Weena, a kind Eloi girl who loved flowers and hoped he could find his machine.
Befriended - to become friends with someone. 'Have you ever befriended someone new at school?'
Together, they collected small lights to shine in the darkness, planning to face the Morlocks and regain the time machine.
Collected - to bring things together from different places. 'What do you like to collect?'
Armed with light and courage, Mr. Tempus and Weena approached the Morlocks' underground lair.
Armed - to be equipped with or carry a weapon or other tool. 'Discuss a time you felt armed with knowledge.'
The Morlocks didn't like the lights and kept away. Mr. Tempus and Weena pushed forward through the dark tunnels.
Deter - to discourage someone from doing something. 'Can you use deter in a sentence about homework?'
They finally found the time machine, guarded by the hesitant Morlocks who feared the bright lights.
Hesitant - slow to act because of fear, indecision, or disinclination. 'Tell me about a time when you were hesitant.'
With a dash, Mr. Tempus reached the machine. He pressed the button as Weena cheered from afar.
Dash - to run or travel somewhere in a great hurry. 'Describe a situation where you had to dash somewhere fast.'
The machine spirited them back home, away from darkness, back to where every day was a bright new tomorrow.
Spirited - full of energy, enthusiasm, and determination. 'What activity do you do with lots of spirit?'
Mr. Tempus never forgot his journey and Weena's friendship. He kept her flower as a reminder of their adventure.
Reminder - something that causes you to remember. 'What is a special reminder you keep?'
