Once upon a time, there lived a King with twelve daughters. They were all very beautiful and kind, and their father loved them very much. Every night the King would send them to sleep in their bedroom, which had twelve beds in it. He would kiss them goodnight, and lock their door to keep them safe inside. However, every morning the King would be puzzled to find that each of his daughters needed new shoes! "Our shoes have holes in!" they would chorus as he unlocked their bedroom door. The King was fed up of buying twelve new pairs of shoes every morning, so he put a message out to the whole of the Kingdom..
The King's message was that any man who could discover where the princesses went at night and why their shoes got worn out, could marry one of the princesses and inherit half the Kingdom. Many princes came from far and wide to try to solve the mystery. However, despite the princes' best efforts, they could not figure out where the princesses went. They would stay outside the door all night, but when morning came, the princesses' shoes were still worn out. It seemed impossible!
Then, one day, a young man named Jack arrived at the King's palace. Jack was a clever lad with a knack for solving puzzles. As the night fell, Jack followed the princesses secretly. To his surprise, he saw something incredible! The princesses danced through a secret passage in their bedroom floor, leading them to a magical land with a grand ballroom. The ballroom was filled with handsome princes who danced with the princesses all night long. Jack quietly returned to the palace, planning to reveal the truth to the King the next morning.
The next morning, Jack told the King everything. The King was amazed and promised Jack that he could marry one of his daughters. But Jack had a different plan. He asked the King if he could choose which daughter to marry, and the King agreed. Jack chose the youngest daughter, Lily, because she was not only the most beautiful but also the kindest of them all. The King was pleased with Jack's choice and declared that Jack and Lily would rule over the Kingdom together one day.
And so, Jack and Lily got married and lived happily ever after. As for the twelve princesses, their secret dancing continued in the magical land hidden beneath their bedroom. From that day forward, the princesses no longer needed new shoes, and the King was relieved. He knew his daughters were safe and enjoyed watching them dance every night in their dreams.
